Introduction

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is a term used to describe the variety of life. It includes all species of animals and plants, their genetic variation, and the complex ecosystems of which they are a part. It does not just cover rare or endangered species, but includes the whole of the natural world from common species such as blackbirds to critically endangered species such as bitterns.

Biodiversity is responsible for giving natural areas their distinct characteristics as a result of the collection of species present in an area. For example a hay meadow is typically made up of a number of grass and wildflower species. Therefore, in short, biodiversity is the variability amongst all living things and their environment.

What is the Lincolnshire Biodiversity Action Plan?

The Lincolnshire Biodiversity Action Plan project covers the historic county of Lincolnshire, which includes North and North East Lincolnshire. Many different people and organisations are being involved in deciding what needs to be done over the next 10 years to conserve our most threatened and declining wildlife.

The result (so far) is a set of action plans which was published on 23rd May 2000 as a document - the "Lincolnshire Biodiversity Action Plan". This document currently contains a set of action plans for 41 habitats and species that require conservation action within Lincolnshire. It is hoped that it will be an invaluable guide to conserving wildlife in our area, and also be a fascinating source of information which can be used for education and research.
